- STAR is an acronym for ‘Situation, Task, Activity, Result’, and each CV example of your previous work experience should ideally include a sentence or two about each of these words. While a normal CV might just list relevant bullet points, a STAR-based CV provides a concise narrative that gives a much fuller picture of your competencies.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Jury trials have resumed at Pima County Superior Court, but they are different from the way they were before the COVID-19 pandemic a year ago.
Instead of sitting together in a jury box, jurors now sit throughout the courtroom behind plexiglass partitions.
The Arizona Daily Star reports that it’s one of several new measures aimed at allowing trials to happen safely.
Court officials say crime victims and their families now have separate viewing areas outside the courtroom to limit the number of people inside.
There is also a new questionnaire that allows potential jurors to raise COVID 19-based concerns.
Jurors are not required to have a coronavirus vaccination. But everyone who comes to court must wear a mask, maintain social distancing and have their temperature checked.
Pima County Presiding Judge Kyle Bryson ordered last year that jury trials be paused until local infection rates improved, according to the Star.
For my work I read a lot of resumes (CV’s). It is an understatement I enjoy doing this. Frequently I find myself in a puzzling endeavor to distill the required competences form a vast document. It is not exactly clear what the candidate did and I am not able to assess the level of job experience. A lot of resumes describe the project itself without the personal contribution of the candidate or lack context and only state a list of skills. Hiring managers handle a large number of applications. For the first selection an average of 4-7 seconds are spend on a resume . Your resume has to stand out to make it through the first selection round.
How to write a good job description?
Resume Starting
How do you write your resume in such a manner it is a delight to read it? The secret is to see your resume not as “your” document but as a document for the reader, the audience is your future employer. How do you write an interesting resume? I find the STAR method very useful for structuring and describing your work experiences. STAR is an abbreviation of Situation,Task, Activity and Result. STAR assists you in writing short and readable stories about your work, containing all aspects your future employer is looking for.
Let’s take a closer look at STAR
Situation
Describe the situation in short. What was going on? Describe the organization in general. What is the purpose of the project or department you are working for? Why was the project or task started? This will give the reader a general idea of the workplace. Example: “I was working for ACME, the second largest producer of widgets in Canada. Within this company I participated in the customer improvement software project. The general goal of this project was to deliver a new frontend system to improve the online customer experience.”
Task
Describe your task linked to the goal and challenge of your project. What was your role within this situation? Describe the key objectives you have addressed. Example: “I worked as a project manager on this project responsible for the delivery of the software changes within time and budget. The project team consisted of 7 team members.”
Activity
List the activities or actions you took in this job. Emphasize the skills and competences you used to realize the tasks. This is the place to list your actual activities. Give some relevant examples and describe them in as much detail as possible. Make sure to limit the text of this part. Example: “I managed the project team consisting of both own employees and consultants of the software supplier. I was responsible for the project schedule and coordinated work between all team members. I coordinated with all the stakeholders both internal and external. I was responsible for monthly project reporting to the project board. I took appropriate actions to control the project budget and to ensure the quality of the end result.”
Result
Resume Starbucks
Describe the result of your actions in business goals. Preferably linked to concrete numbers, such as an increase in sales, number of customers or improved quality. If possible link this to specific actions you took within the work so it is obvious your actions contributed to this result. Do not be shy taking credit for your achievements. Example: The end result was a new customer shop website with an improved user interface. This resulted in a 25% increase in sales due to improved ease of use. The added cross selling feature in the checkout window resulted in an additional 30% extra sales of related products.”
Reflect on your actions
As you can see the STAR method is an easy way to create great descriptions of work experience. You can also use this in your interview when describing your past jobs and projects. Make sure you stand out in the interview by adding an extra R to STAR: Reflection. Reflect on your job description by adding your own opinion to the job you did. In hindsight, what would you have done differently knowing this outcome. This shows self-knowledge and the ability to self-improve.
Good luck with your resume. I’m looking forward to read your experience. Please state comments below. Thank you.
